i-sopod is housed.

Electrical supply – 1 x 13 amp waterproof spur located to the rear of where the tank is to be located and positioned 1 metre from the floor.

Walls – again something to stand up to the corrosive nature of Epsom salts. Mermaid water proof panels from Norske Interiors (or similar) are recommended.

Remote control – the tank is supplied with a remote control unit which controls lights, temperature, filtration, session length, MP3 sound source and attendant call. The RC should be located in the reception area.

Company history

The Floatworks started life in 1993 with just two tanks and we now operate nine, making us the world’s largest flotation tank centre with over 1200 customers each month. We are considered to be a leading authority on the benefits of floatation and have become the first port of call for many people, both here and overseas, wishing to open their own centres.

Why have we built a floatation tank?

Over the years we have acted as agents for various manufacturers and had experience of many types of float tank. Each model we encountered seemed to have its own shortcomings and, in the end, we concluded that no one had really been able to build the ideal system. We decided then that the time had come for a new approach and, accordingly, embarked on a lengthy period of research and development which finally led to the creation of the i-sopod.

We believe that the introduction of this model will revolutionise the industry.

Customer profiles

There is no such thing as the stereotypical floatation tank customer. Our clients range from 16 to 80 years old, and come from a wide range of social and professional backgrounds. On the whole, the vast majority of our customers use the floatation tank for relaxation and elimination of stress. However we are also visited by clients who use the tanks for many different purposes.

We are particularly popular with heavily pregnant women, businessmen & women who regularly fly long-haul and sufferers of chronic back pain and migraine. Often we are visited by professional athletes from various fields who use the tanks for the maximisation of training routines and for accelerated recovery from injuries. This is a relatively new innovation in floatation therapy and new data is being produced all the time, although the Australian Institute of Sports regard the use of the float tank as an integral part of the training regime for their sportsmen and women. As we know, when it comes to sports, the Australians usually know what they’re talking about.

For several years float tanks were solely used by researchers in university laboratories or by private individuals. In 1983 however, Floating increased in popularity as more became known about Floatation and its effects. Today, floatation tanks can be found in health spas, beauty farms, bio-fitness institutes, hospitals, rehabilitation facilities, fitness centres & professional sports clubs, and are used for “super-learning” courses by some American Universities.

Full details are retained of all the clients that visit the Floatworks float tank centre and this information reveals a broad cross section of occupations, with a significant percentage of clients being professionals from the middle to high-income bracket.

Organic sales

Our clientèle is evenly split 50 / 50 male to female and we manage to convert something in the region of 90% of all enquiries into confirmed bookings. Customers are prepared to travel considerable distances to use our facilities, and it’s not unusual to have a 2-week waiting list for weekend bookings. The majority of our custom is obtained through word of mouth (72%), as new customers are very inclined to tell their friends about such a novel and beneficial experience. It is an activity like no other, and sells itself naturally.

The Time is Now

Perhaps as a consequence to the get-rich-quick lifestyles of the last few decades, stress-related illness has become a major factor affecting an ever-increasing number of businesses and their workforces. Today the problem has escalated to the extent that it costs British industry £ 3.7 billion annually. An incredible 10-13 billion working days are lost every year, and the courts have a backlog of 6400 individuals attempting to gain compensation from former employers for stress-related illness. Time Magazine recently ran a front page proclaiming stress to be the major epidemic of the modern day.

As such, many major companies are trying to head off such actions by seeking out remedies in order to maintain a healthy, happy productive workforce. Increasingly we are finding that these companies are turning to floatation therapy for the solution.

While there are many alternatives for stress relief, such as Yoga and Tai Chi, these tend to demand a high level of commitment and dedication from the customer to achieve noticeable results, as the effects are not instant. It may be a matter of weeks or even months before any noticeable effect is attained. Floatation therapy offers an instant relief, and requires no skills from the user other than the ability to lie still for an hour.

A floatation tank session is guaranteed to eliminate stress, leaving you with a clear mind to concentrate 100% on the matter in hand. It increases creativity, the ability to solve problems, concentration span, personal motivation and energy levels.

What is a floatation tank?

500 kg of Epsom salts are added to 1000 litres of water, creating a 30 cm deep solution, which is heated to 35.5 degrees C (skin temperature).

The temperature of the water means that once you are settled in the tank, it is virtually impossible to distinguish between parts of the body that are in contact with the water, and those that aren’t, in effect “fooling” the brain into believing that the person is floating in mid-air.

The floating experience

Floating weightlessly your body is perfectly supported by a cushion of silky skin-temperature liquid. Freed from all sensation of gravity, temperature, touch, sight and sound (which together account for 90% of normal neuro-muscular activity), you conserve and redirect vast amounts of natural physical and mental energy.

The ultra-deep relaxation of floating “resets” the body’s hormonal and metabolic balance, strengthening resistance to and accelerating recovery from the effects of stress, illness, injury or strenuous exercise.

Unless you are an astronaut, this is the only situation you will encounter where your body is free from the harmful forces of gravity. Every single muscle in the body is allowed to totally relax, with ear plugs in and, if you wish, the tank’s interior lights off, the quietness and the darkness allow the mind to drift into the deepest state of relaxation possible.

The buoyancy created by the dense Epsom-salt solution effectively removes the effects of gravity on the body, and brings the individual close to an experience of total weightlessness. A huge amount of brain-power is used every second in order to deal with the strain that gravity places on one’s body. As the body is now totally supported, and external stimuli is reduce there is nothing for the brain to do and every muscle is allowed to relax completely.

With no commands needing to be sent out, the logical side of the brain is rendered redundant, and its activity slows down until it synchronises with the creative side. This leaves the individual in a dream-like state, akin to the thoughts experienced just before you go to sleep. In this state, the brain releases vast amounts of endorphins.

While the state of relaxation may be deep and profound, the individual’s brain stays dreamily alert. To get technical, the brain gradually shifts from its usual “alpha” state to generate theta waves, the state-of-mind that Buddhist monks try to reach through hours of meditation and years of training. You can achieve this in a matter of minutes just by lying back into the silky warm sea of bliss that is the floatation experience!

The History of the Floatation tank

The first floatation tank was developed in 1954 by the American neurophysiologist Professor Dr John C. Lilly while working and studying psychoanalysis at the National institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) in Bethesda, Maryland USA.

Together with his associate Dr. Jay Shirley, Dr. Lilly became intrigued by the question of the origins of conscious activity within the brain. The question was whether the brain needed external stimuli to keep its conscious states going. Lilly and his associate set to work trying to devise a system that would restrict environmental stimulation as much as was practical and feasible.

Lilly’s first float tank was one in which the user was suspended upright, entirely underwater, head completely covered by an underwater breathing apparatus and mask. These first float tanks were originally referred to as isolation tanks or sensory deprivation tanks and over the years as Lilly continued his experiments with floatation, simplifying and improving the general design he found that he could float in a more relaxing supine position, rather than suspended feet downward in fresh water, if more buoyant Epsom salt water was used. Other refinements, such as water heaters with thermostats sensitive enough to keep the water the perfect skin temperature, and a water filter for the reuse of the Epsom salts were added over the years. By the early 1970′s, Lilly had perfected the flotation tank design that is in use today.

Procedures

The solution in the tanks is automatically kept at a constant temperature and is inherently sterile due to the high concentration of dissolved Epsom salts (Magnesium Sulphate). After each float session the powerful filtration system is automatically activated thereby eliminating any debris and keeping the tank clean at all times.

General maintenance is straightforward and simple differing only slightly from the procedures used to maintain a whirlpool bath, spa or swimming pool. After each session it is necessary to wipe salt from the external surfaces of the tank and at the same time a small amount of disinfectant is administered to the solution automatically (a local government requirement) to ensure complete hygiene.

Weekly maintenance involves making sure that the pH levels are correct with any adjustment being made through the addition of dry acid. The checking of disinfectant and pH levels takes only a couple of minutes using test strips and a photometer. A weekly check of the water level is also required.

Buoyancy readings need to be taken every 2 weeks or so, depending on tank usage, to ensure that sufficient salt is dissolved in the solution – any deficiency is easily rectified by adding the required amount. On average levels need to be topped up every 2 months.

Routine running costs are approximately £10.00 per week which covers chemicals, salts and electricity.
